GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER ANNOUNCES CSU STUDENT TRUSTEE APPOINTMENT
Long Beach, CA, November 20, 2009 – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed Curtis Schlaufman, 23, of California State University, Fullerton, to a two-year term on the California State University’s governing body, the Board of Trustees.
The Board of Trustees is the highest policy-making body for the 23-campus California State University system, one of the largest systems of public higher education in the world. The board establishes policies on student fees, admissions criteria, technology, financial aid, and numerous other areas that impact the nearly 450,000 students at all 23 CSU campuses.
Each year the California State Student Association (CSSA), as the official voice of CSU students, conducts a search for the next student trustee. Students hold two seats in staggered terms on the 25-member board. They have the same powers and privileges as other trustees―except that only one of them votes―and they are paid a modest stipend for conducting the business of the board and attending board meetings, which are held six times a year. Their primary responsibility is to present the positions, issues and perspectives of CSU students.
As incoming student trustee, Curtis will occupy the non-voting seat his first year. He will become the voting representative when senior student trustee, Russel Statham of CSU Fresno, completes his term in June 2010.

Hello,
While I am indeed please that a student trustee has been appointed, I was under the impression that there are supposed to be two student trustees appointed. In other words, there are supposed to be two student trustees at all times. When Trustee Stratham leaves his office in the spring there will only be one student trustee in office when there should be two.

Hi Crystal:
You are correct that there should always be two student trustees in office, and when Trustee Statham leaves office at the end of June 2010, a new trustee will be appointed as the non-voting student trustee and Trustee Schlaufman will replace Statham as the voting trustee. Each year CSSA conducts the search for the next student trustee and recommends two to five students for appointment by the governor. CSSA is currently accepting applications for the next student trustee who will serve from July 2010-June 2012.
